After reviewing the financial aspects of the upcoming Energy Efficiency Project Monday night, Hillsboro School Board members demonstrated quite a capacity for efficiency themselves as they handled many house keeping chores in preparation for the Fall semester.
The regular meeting began with a report from School Superintendent Curt Bisarek and a Baird representative on a preliminary financing plan and authorization to proceed on the $1,500,000 General Obligation Qualified Zone Academy Bond as a Bank Placement with Farmers State Bank.
The Board unanimously authorized the plan that would utilize some of the fund balance ($120,000) to allow the tax impact to be very small, which was the goal when this process began.
This plan would have $2.5 million available for projects under the energy exemption.
Carol Jefferies from Farmers State Bank attended the meeting and told Board members that the Bank Board has already given approval for the loan and appreciates the business.
A date of July 22 at 6:30 p.m. was set by the Board for a meeting to award the Performance Contract for Energy Efficiency Projects.
The Board then moved into a number of decisions on the comings and goings of the faculty and staff.
Offering resignations are: Title One Paraprofessional Arlene Daines, Special Education Paraprofessional Kathy Redington, first grade teacher Brittany Olson, and School Nurse Rhonda Peterson.
All the resignations were accepted by the Board with appreciation to the employees for their fine service to the School District. Bisarek noted that 140 years of teaching experience had left the district in the last few months.
Posting for the two paraprofessional positions will be published internally and externally according to the School Handbook.
The hiring of a new first grade teacher was tabled due to staff movements at this time.
The Board then unanimously approved:
• The transfer of Lori Cherf from first grade to Title One Reading Teacher with the administration approval of an evaluation by both parties after one year and the understanding that Cherf can return to first grade at that time if she so desires.
• The transfer of Karla Frederick to the fifth grade position.
• The hiring of Kelly Krueger as the Elementary School Guidance Counselor at no less than 62.5 per cent.
• Modified administrative contracts to comply with IRS changes.
• A School Nursing Contract with Gundersen-St. Joseph’s Hospital for the 2013-2014 school year at 25 hours a week nd 178 days.
• A bid for an Elementary School Playground landscaping project from Greg’s New Leaf Landscaping.
• A bid from Wipfs Flooring to remove carpet and install tile in the 4-K classroom.
• The purchase of a STAR assessment program.
• A bid from milk vendor Prairie Farms for the 2013-2014 school year.
• A bid from bread vendor Sara Lee for the 2013-2014 school year.
• A bid from food vendor Sysco for primary food service and Reinhart as the secondary.
After a report from Bisarek, the Board reviewed changes in the 6th-12th Grade Handbook for the 2013-2014 school year.
The Board met in closed session right after the regular business meeting.
The next School Board meeting is scheduled for Aug. 12 at 7 p.m. in the high school library.
