The Crawford County Land Conservation committee is working on a formal resolution opposing proposed legislation SB-349, the bill authored by Senator Tom Tiffany that would strip local government without zoning of its ability to control industrial sand mining.

Modeled closely upon a related resolution adopted last month by LaCrosse County, the resolution is expected to go to the Crawford County Board’s January meeting.

The initial resolution draft stated that “health, safety, economic, environmental, and quality of life impacts of these operations are primarily issues of local concern” and that the board supports “local control of nonmetallic mining, and opposes SB-349 and any state legislation that would preempt the ability of towns and counties to craft their own regulations tailored to their individual circumstances.”

“The LCC tabled this resolution so that more detail could be put into it,” said Dave Troester, Crawford County Conservationist. “Specifically, we want to address the ‘one set of rules fits all’ issue and why we feel local control is necessary.”

The Land Conservation Committee will meet again on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013 at 10 a.m. at the Crawford County Administration Building in Prairie du Chien.
