CUBA CITY—While attending Friday night’s boys basketball game, an unsuspecting John Davis was surprised to receive recognition for his years as custodian at Cuba City High School.

Every year Cuba City nominates one person who has given their time, effort and leadership to the school’s athletic program.

The award is known as the WADA—Wisconsin Athletic Director Association—Award. At the 2015 spring coaches meeting, the coaches voted Davis to receive the award.

“During his eight years as custodian here at the high school, [Davis] always made sure our coaches’ equipment was in top shape and the facilities looked as sharp as possible,” Jeff Pustina, the school’s athletic director, said. “He took a vested interest in how the coaches, kids and teams did as a loyal spectator for over 40 years.”

Davis also volunteered with the Cuba City Special Olympics for many years and now volunteers at a local food pantry to help needy families in the area.

“On behalf of the Cuba City School District, the athletic department and previous WADA recipients, it is my pleasure to recognize John Davis as this year’s WADA Service Award recipient,” Pustina said.

The plaque was presented by Davis’ daughter, Holly Droessler; son-in-law, Jamie Droessler; and two grandchildren, Faith and Drew Droessler.
