Platteville High School music students visited Nashville April 9–13.

Three days after their return, Platteville Public Schools was announced as one of the Best Communities for Music Education in the U.S.

The school district was one of 12 in Wisconsin, and the only one in Southwest Wisconsin, named by the NAMM Foundation, a nonprofit supported by the National Association of Music Merchants.

The school district will hold a special celebration during the Platteville High School Music Awards in the PHS Commons Monday, June 8 at 6 p.m.

School districts also named as the Best Communities for Music Education include Ashland, Chilton, Fort Atkinson, Green Bay, Hortonville, Jefferson, Kettle Moraine, Pulaski, Ripon, St. Croix Falls and Watertown, as well as United Community Center in Milwaukee. Richland Center High School, Cedarburg High School, Westosha Central in Salem, Horace Mann Middle School in Wausau, and Waukesha North High School are one of 120 schools that received the Support Music Merit Award.

NAMM Foundation partners include Americans for the Arts, the Arts Education Partnership, Drum Corps International, the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus, Music for All, the National School Boards Association, the Music Achievement Council, the National Association for Music Educators, the President’s Council on the Arts and the Humanities, Sesame Workshop, the Kennedy Center, Turnaround Arts and the VH1 Save the Music Foundation.

•    The PHS Nashville tour included a country music performance aboard the General Jackson Showboat at Opryland Resort; a Grand Ole Opry tour and performance that included Joe Diffie, Jim Ed Brown and Mark Wills; a performance of “The Pirates of Penzance” at the Nashville Opera; and RCA Studio B, the “Land of 1,000 Hits,” where Elvis Presley recorded most of his songs; and line dancing at the Wildhorse Saloon. A visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum included a performance by country musicians Tyler Barham and John Griffin, who performed at Platteville High School in September, and songwriter Matt Dragstrem, who has penned hits for Carrie Underwood and Florida Georgia Line. Students gave three clinic performances at Belmont University.

The trip was coordinated by PHS music teachers Nancy Fairchild, Owen Strizic, and Amelia Armstrong, with the support of Bob Rogers Travel. Trip chaperones were administrator ReNah Reuter, nurse Chris Lange, accompanist Terry Dillon, photographer Amanda Cooper, Platteville Music Booster officers Sue Musarra and Mitzi Herber, Theresa Kaiser, Tud Bowden, Tami Wall-Feyen, Dan Fairchild, Zack Armstrong, Dan Flesch, and Martha Schaefer.
