I was pleasantly surprised to see an overflow group of interested citizens at Monday night’s School Board meeting that centered on the recent referendum that failed to attract enough supporters.

If that meeting, and those who attended it, are any sort of indicator, we haven’t heard the end of the word referendum.

There were some very intelligent, well thought out questions and suggestions directed at the Board members who, obviously, appreciated the interest.

It seems to me that a previous Hillsboro school referendum followed a similar path when it included an assembly hall addition to the high school and a gymnasium for the Elementary School where the lunch room doubled for a gym.

I seem to recall the first attempt failed, but after some readjustments, including losing the assembly hall, it succeeded.

Now, our very fine Elementary School is second to none in this area.

There were many ideas presented by Board members and visitors Monday night by folks who care enough about our local kids to stand up and be counted.

There are changes in the wind and regardless of your personal beliefs in this matter, it is important that you attend the town hall meeting Nov. 24 in the high school cafeteria. Bring your ideas along and share them with your neighbors and the members of the School Board who now find themselves responsible for the future of Hillsboro.

You don’t need to have a son or daughter in school or, for that matter, even a grandchild attending.  But, hopefully, you have enough concern for this great little town to share your thoughts and hear those of your neighbors.

You might learn something…or even teach something!

And while we’re chatting about the school district, did you know what a big help you can be to the Elementary children just be saving food labels.

Our students are currently collecting Campbell Soup UPCs toward a goal of 1,600,000.

And, that’s not all. In addition to the “mmmm,mmmm good” soups, several associated brands also carry “Campbell Points” on their UPC codes.

They include: Pepperidge Farm, Goldfish, Bic, Prego, Pace, Post cereals, V8 juices, Glad, Pop Secret popcorn, Swanson, Dananino, and Danimals.

You can drop them off at school or, for your convenience, Farmers State Bank and Royal Bank  have drop boxes available.

How about enjoying a great performance of the wonderful musical, “Funny Girl.”

Hillsboro High School students will be bringing the story of Broadway singing star Fanny Brice to the stage on Friday night, Nov. 14 and Saturday night, Nov. 15.

Curtain time is 7 p.m. Barbra Streisand probably won’t be appearing in the starring role, but audience members will never know.

It’s that good!
