Happy Library Week

As the director of the Platteville Public Library, I would like to personally invite you to visit the Platteville Public Library to celebrate National Library Week April 12–18. Not only is this an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of our library to the community, we would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude for your continued support, collaboration, and belief in our mission.

Every day, our library welcomes people of all backgrounds to discover resources like books, magazines, DVDs, computers and WiFi access, and online databases. We offer weekly story times for babies and children, unique family programming, book clubs, computer classes, and much more. All activities, resources and services are available at no charge to the public.

I am often asked about the relevance of libraries in the digital age, and this is a topic that I am very excited to discuss. Across the country, cities are reimagining their libraries as inviting civic centers designed to foster public gatherings and a variety of learning experiences. Libraries represent opportunities for community interaction, cooperation, and civic engagement. Books constitute only part of the exchange of information and ideas taking place today. In the digital age, the production and consumption of information far outpace any library’s storage capacity.

Our city is on the cusp of a very exciting development project in the downtown. The Platteville Public Library is in a position that would allow us to double in size. I encourage you to visit the Platteville Public Library during National Library Week to explore our collections, take advantage of our free programming, and consider the unlimited possibilities.

On Monday, April 13, we are celebrating Patron Appreciation Day, so please top in for coffee, cookies and conversation. I am happy to hear your comments, questions, and concerns about all things Library related. Happy National Library Week!

The Journal reserves the right to edit material that is libelous or otherwise offensive to community standards and to shorten letters the Journal feels are excessively long. All letters must be signed and the signature must appear on the printed letter, along with a contact number or email for verification. Some submitted letters may not be published due to space constraints. “Thank you” letters will not be printed.
