Letters to The Platteville Journal for May 27

One board applicant

The appointment process of Michael Lieurance to the Grant County Board is very troubling. That’s nothing against Mr. Lieurance — just the process. Wisconsin has a history of open government, but this process was very closed.

The position was never posted in the process under the spirit of the Open Meetings Law. Candidates were informally accepted by board chair Robert Keeney even prior to Sup. Larry Wolf’s vacating the position. This shut out other possible candidates, who waited for the formal opening announcement. One candidate, Mr. Lieurance, applied.

Sup. Wolf informed me that his county legal counsel told him to publicly post a previous board position when Wolf was county board chair. This gave numerous people a chance to apply, unlike the closed process of chairman Kenney.

Mr. Keeney and the Grant County Board have shut the public out of this important appointment. They should be ashamed. They should consider reopening the process. You, the board, can do better than this. The process is just as important as the result.
