UW-Platteville wins Mudfest rugby tournament

UWPlatteville won the 18th Annual Mudfest rugby tournament Saturday with wins over Viterbo, Oshkosh Mens club, UWEau Claire, Iowa and UWMilwaukee. Pictured above are all members of the UWPlatteville rugby club (both A and B teams).

     The UW–Platteville Rugby Club held its 18th Annual Mudfest Tournament Saturday with 12 teams taking part.
     UWP’s A Team successfully won their pool with victories over Viterbo, Oshkosh Men’s Club and UW–Eau Claire to advance to the championship bracket.
     In the semifinals the Pioneers prevailed against a very tough University of Iowa club by the final score of 14–12 with a score in the final minutes of play.
     UWP went on to win the Mudfest championship match against the Milwaukee Black & Blue men’s team 37–10. 
     Teams in the tournament included college teams from UW–Eau Claire, Gopher College, University of Iowa, UW–Madison, UW–Platteville A, UW–Platteville B, Viterbo and the University of Northern Iowa, as well as men’s teams the Fox City Gargoyles, the Fond du Lac Men’s Club, the Oshkosh Men’s Club and Milwaukee Black & Blue.
     Iowa–Grant graduates Luke Sander (2009) and Nick Jo-hannesen (2009) played for the UW–Platteville A team.
     Andrew Campbell, a 2004 graduate of Iowa–Grant and current Belmont/Platteville head wrestling coach, played for the Oshkosh Men’s Club.
     UW–Platteville rugby has two seasons, spring and fall, with the spring season being made up exclusively of tournament play in Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois.
     The fall season consists of an eight-game collegiate schedule with matches on Saturdays in September and October. 
     Mudfest is a unique tournament as it pools together both collegiate and men’s teams in the same tournament.
Mudfest began in 1985.
