GAME OF THE WEEK

SWAL SOFTBALL: Fennimore 5, Cuba City 4

CUBA CITY — Fennimore’s wild comeback victory over visiting Southwestern on Thursday, April 18 was the turning point of the season.

Coach Jim Prochaska’s Golden Eagles scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally for a 10–9 victory on Bailee Hunt’s bases loaded infield single to shortstop.

The win was the beginning of a four-game winning streak for Prochaska’s suddenly surging Eagles.

Fennimore scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to stun host Cuba City 5–4 last Tuesday night.

“We didn’t have a hit until the seventh inning, but Madelyn Glassbrenner lead off with a single and that got us going. Their starting pitcher was tiring and they decided to go to Kayla Stitch.”

Brecken Govier, Tierra Flynn and Mariah Kopp greeted Stitch with three straight singles to drive in three runs and make it a one-run game.

After a ground out, Drehya Dresen walked and Claire Faulkner singled to centerfield to tie the game.

Hunt followed with a single back up the middle to give Fennimore a 5–4 lead.

“Then we got them 1-2-3 in the seventh to get the win. That was a big one for us to come back from four down in the last inning after not having a hit up to that point,” said Prochaska. “Dreyha nice play on bunt attempt to start the bottom of the seventh and that was a big play to keep the tying run off base.”

Senior Taylor Ferretti (5–4) struck out 10 and walked three, while allowing four runs on eight hits in the complete game victory.

Friday afternoon, Ferretti struck out 14 and did allow a walk as Fennimore dominated host Pecatonica 13–5 in a non-conference game at Blanchardville.

“Taylor Ferretti is really pitching pretty well right now,” added Prochaska. “She has double digit strikeouts in the last five games, but she has really reduced her walk rate. She also had a great day at the plate and may have had two home runs if not for the wind blowing in so hard.”

Ferretti finished 3-for-4 with two long doubles and an RBI.

Brelynn Neuroth drove in three runs and Govier scored three times.

Fennimore stole nine bases in the win.

“We are also starting to play pretty good defense, we are getting people on and stealing bases and getting timely hitting to drive them in. We played really well against Pecatonica scoring 13 runs and shutting them down.”

Monday afternoon, Fennimore jumped out to an early 8–1 lead after a big five-run fourth inning and held on for an 8–6 SWAL win at Riverdale.

Glassbrenner went 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead the Fennimore offense.

Ferretti struck out 14 and walked five while allowing six runs, five earned, on three hits.

The Golden Eagles are now 5–6 overall and 4–4 in conference play after a 1–6, 0–4 start.

Fennimore’s SWAL home game with Mineral Point was postponed last Thursday and will be made up May 10. Tuesday’s home game with Darlington was also postponed and will be made up at a later date.

NEXT: The Golden Eagles will now host Iowa–Grant Thursday and Richland Center on Friday before hosting the Fennimore Tournament on Saturday. The Eagles are also scheduled to travel to Darlington on Monday afternoon.
