Platteville swimmers take second at Monroe

Platteville 10-year-old Shaena Prestegard set a new Platteville summer swim team record with a fourth-place finish in the 200 individual medley Saturday at the Monroe Invitational.

MONROE — Mother Nature held off just long enough July 11 to allow for completion of the Dr. Stiles Monroe Invitational.

As the final 200 freestyle relay race of the 82-event youth swim meet, rain began to fall and swimmers and spectators alike raced for their cars.

When the final points were tallied Matt Wunderlin and his Platteville summer swim team finished second out of nine teams. Platteville won seven events and also broke three new team records at the meet.

“I was a bit surprised that we took second place given the level of competition at this meet,” said Wunderlin. “I put kids into events more to give them new experiences than to consider team placing. Our athletes ended up doing very well.”

Platteville’s 15-and-over boys scored the bulk of the points for Wunderlin’s team, specifically 16-year-old Nick Demaree.

Demaree won the male 200 freestyle (2:56.13), the 15–18 200 individual medley (3:29.12), the 100 freestyle (1:19.78) and the 50 butterfly (41.10). He also finished second in the 50 freestyle (33.66) and 50 backstroke (42.23). Demaree scored 90 individual points for the team.

Connor Feyen also had a fantastic meet finishing second in three events (100 free, 50 fly, 50 breaststroke) and third in three others (200 free, 200 IM, 50 free) in the boys’ 15–18 age group to score 75 team points.

Benjamin Wilson scored 70 points in the boys’ 15–18 age group. He finished second in the 200 IM, and third in the 100 free, 50 fly and 50 breaststroke.

Alla Brehm was the Platteville girls’ top point-getter, scoring 72 points in six events. She won the girls’ 13–14 50 breaststroke in 48.74 and placed second in the 200 individual medley (3:10.01) in her age group.

Madison Albert-Nelson scored 70 points in six events and placed second in the girls’ 13–14 100 freestyle (1:24.60) and second in the 50 butterfly (40.03).

Caroline Gates won the girls’ 9–10 50 butterfly (54.20) as well as the 50 breaststroke (1:014.85) and placed second in the 50 backstroke (58.53) to score 45 points in three events.

Twelve-year-old Dylan Prestegard set a pair records in the boys’ 11–12 age division. His fourth-place time of 1:46.85 and fifth-place finish of 4:22.73 in the 200 individual medley both established new team marks.

Younger sister Shaena Prestegard set a new team record in the 9–10 girls’ 200 individual medley at 5:12.26 to finish fourth.

Titus Wunderlin broke the Platteville boys’ 9–10 mark in the 200 individual medley with a sixth-place finish of 4:30.33.

“It was fun to see some more team records fall in some pretty hard events,” said Wunderlin. “The swimmers have been working hard and the results show it.”

Last Wednesday Platteville suffered its first dual meet loss of the summer against the host Sugar River Rapids 943–549 at New Glarus.

Platteville will return to action this Saturday at the Milton Invitational.
