Four 910 boys team records set

Anna Gates won the 1314 girls 50-meter backstroke.

The Platteville Summer Swim Team used big numbers and big performances to win the fourth annual Tom Caccia Invitational at the Family Aquatic Center Saturday.

Platteville won with 2,369 points, easily outdistancing the second-place Sugar River Rapids.

“For the younger athletes, almost every single swim was a lifetime best, and our older athletes were consistently near their best times, if not faster,” said coach Matt Wunderlin. “The momentum of doing well fed on itself so that every race had children doing great things they’ve never done before.”

The Platteville 9–10 boys set four team records, all involving swimmer Titus Wunderlin. He set records in winning the 100-meter individual medley, 50 butterfly (breaking the old record by almost 15 seconds) and 100 freestyle, and was part of the record-breaking 200 medley relay, along with Sawyer Roth, Marcus Kreul and Tristan Pink.

Platteville won 25 of 80 races, adding points with numerous second- and third-place finishes.

“This summer we had a lot of new swimmers so we spent more time on technique than normal — which is already a lot,” said coach Wunderlin. “But 14 new team records and lots of individual and team successes showed that this was worth it. Most importantly we had fun and the children showed great sportsmanship.

“It is always great to close out a season with a win. The children worked smart and hard this summer and the results speak for themselves. I am very proud of all of them, and of the great families we coaches get to serve.”
