RIDGEWAY — The 2012 Home Talent League season came to an end for the Platteville Woodchucks this past Sunday with a 3–0 loss at second-seeded Ridgeway in the first round of the Western Section playoffs.
While Platteville went down fighting, the Woodchucks lack of offense eventually was their undoing.
Platteville managed just three hits, two by shortstop Trevor Kattre, and only had four base runners in the entire nine-inning game.
Ridgeway starter Zac Arneson allowed just two hits through 42/3 innings before leaving the game with a pulled hamstring.
Reliever Chris Thousand was even better allowing just one hit over the final 41/3 innings without issuing a walk. Thousand struck out four to earn the win in the combined shutout.
The Cardinals scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning and obviously never trailed.
Ridgeway added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Platteville starter Luke Ware took the loss despite one of his better outings of the season. Ware (3–5) kept Platteville in the game despite its striking lack of offense by limiting Ridgeway to two earned runs on nine hits in eight innings of work. He struck out seven and walked three.
The Woodchucks committed three errors in the loss, one of which accounted for Ridgeway’s unearned run in the fourth inning.
Platteville finished the season 4–13 overall.
No. 2 seed Ridgeway (12–5) advanced to face No. 3 seed Wiota (11–6) in this Sunday’s Western Section semifinals.
Wiota defeated Monroe (5–12) 12–0 in seven innings this past Sunday.
Top-seeded and regular season section champion Verona (16–1) defeated Blanchardville (4–13) 11–1 in Sunday’s opening round, while Argyle (11–6) defeated Dodgeville (9–8) in the section’s other quarterfinal playoff game.
