Rockies cool off Indians
Wiota HTL Wiegel color
WIOTA CATCHER Taylor Wiegel was unable to slap the tag on Hollandales Alex Schauff (#9) on a close play at the plate in the sixth inning of Sundays Home Talent League game. Schauff went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in and two runs scored for the Rockies in their 8-5 win over Wiota. The Indians are 6-3 in Sunday League play.

HOLLANDALE – Hollandale pitcher Kyle Thompson tossed eight scoreless innings and the Rockies used some timely two-out hitting to earn their first Home Talent Sunday League victory with an 8-5 decision over Wiota in Hollandale on Sunday, July 1.
Thompson shut out the Indians (6-3 in Sunday League, 7-6 overall) over the first eight innings and his Rockies (1-9) aided his cause by grabbing an 8-0 lead through six innings.
Alex Schauff’s two-out, two-run double in the home-half of the second inning opened the scoring, and Cody Carmody followed with a RBI-single and scored on a throwing error to put the Rockies up 4-0.
Brad Zander lined RBI-singles in the third and fifth frames, and the Rockies added a pair of runs on a two-out error in the sixth to extend the lead to 8-0.
Seven of the Rockies’ eight runs came with two outs as the hosts went 5-for-11 with two down and runners on bases through eight innings. Wiota, on the other hand, was 0-for-6 with two outs and a runner on during that same span.
The Indians finally ended the shutout in the top of the ninth by plating five runs off Thompson to put a bit of a scare into the Rockies, but Thompson worked his way out of the jam to hang on for the complete-game victory.
Wade Black singled and scored on a ground out by Jake Meier for the Indians’ first run. Taylor Wiegel and Merrill Brunson followed with RBI-singles, and Brad Schliem slammed a two-run home run for Wiota.
Schliem finished 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBIs. Brunson also had three hits for the Indians, while Jeff Solberg went 3-for-5 with a double.
Indian starter Justin Doyle suffered the loss, yielding six runs (five earned) on nine hits and a walk with two strikeouts.
