BENTON — Potosi and Highland each put together a couple of big offensive innings to sink the Benton/Shullsburg co-op in Six Rivers West softball action on the diamond.

The visiting Chieftains (5-6 overall, 3-1 Six Rivers) used a six-run rally in the top of the first inning to roll to a 13-3 six-inning win over the Zephyr-Miners (1-6, 0-3) at Swift Park on Tuesday, April 9, while the Cardinals (7-0, 3-0) plated four runs in the home-half of the third inning to erase a 2-0 Ben-Shulls lead and then exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull away for a 12-2 five-inning decision at HHS on Monday, April 15.

Senior Joleeza Rice went 2-for-3 with a double and run batted in against Potosi, and she had one of the team’s two hits and drove in a run against Highland.

Senior Lydia Jones added two hits for Ben/Shulls against Potosi, while Taylor Mowry, Layla Alt and Sarah Fluhr scored runs in the game.

Shae Siegert went 4-for-4 with a triple, a double, six RBI and three runs scored to lead Potosi at the plate.

Alt gave the Zephyr-Miners the early lead at Highland when she drilled a triple to plate Mowry for a run in the top of the first inning, and she later scored on a RBI-single by Rice to make it 2-0.

Highland ace Grace Pustina shut them down for there as she didn’t allow a hit or a run the rest of the way.

At the plate, Haley Kleist went 3-for-3 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored for the Cards, who finished the game with 15 hits.

The Zephyr-Miners’ Six Rivers game at home against Black Hawk on Thursday, April 11, was postponed due to the weather and has been rescheduled for Friday, May 3, at Swift Park beginning at 5 p.m.

Benton/Shullsburg has upcoming games scheduled at Monticello on Thursday, April 18, and at home against Scales Mound/River Ridge on Monday, April 22, and against Belmont on Tuesday, April 23. All three games are set to start at 5 p.m.
