Darlington girls, BSMS boys claim titles at Redbird Invite

    DARLINGTON – The Darlington girls’ track and field team won six events on the way to capturing the team title and the Benton/Scales Mound/Shullsburg boys’ team used a total team effort to run away with the team title at Monday’s Redbird Invitational.
    The Lady Redbirds placed competitors in 17 of the 19 events to finished first in the girls’ meet with 127 points, placing ahead of Cuba City (95.5) and the BSMS tri-op (92). Black Hawk placed ninth (30) and Belmont was 10th (29) at the 11-team event.
    The Zephyrs placed competitors in 18 of the 19 events, including three athletes in three events and two athletes in five others events, to take home the boys’ title with 164 points. The Redbirds were second (129), while the Warriors ninth (35) and the Braves 10th (32) on the day.
    The Lady Redbirds got titles from Kennedy Rankin in the discus (120’2”) and as a member of the 4x100-meter throwers relay team (1:00.11) along with Claire Leahy, Marissa Gould and Hannah McCarthy.
    Ilse Mendez won the 1,600-meter run (5:38.53) and Hunter Weber won the pole vault (9’0”) for the hosts, while the Lady Redbirds’ 4x100 relay team of Maddie Crist, Natty Soper, McKenna Leuchtenmacher and Lizzie Schwartz took first in 53.88 seconds and the 3,200 relay team of Morgan Black, Brooke Douglas, Miriam Lindqvist and Erin Wolf added a first in 10:57.54.
    Firsts for BSMS went to Emma Lawrence in the 400-meter dash (59.42), Hildie Sigwarth in the 3,200 run (13:23.15) and Maggie Dougherty in the triple jump (31’1.5”).
    Belmont’s Lizzy Haag won the 800 (2:36.31), while Black Hawk’s Haley Gertsch placed second in the 400 (1:01.95) and the 800 (2:37.19) and fourth in the 100 (13.67).
    In the boys’ meet, David Germaine and Aaron Pulvermacher teamed up to lead BSMS to titles in the 800 relay, 1,600 relay and 3,200 relay races. The duo joined with Caleb O’Neill and Ethan Shetler to win the 4x200 (1:35.10), with Shetler and Troy Turpin to win the 4x400 (3:30.78) and with O’Neill and Josh Redfearn to win the 4x800 (8:45.58).
    Ben Davis added a title in the high jump (6’2”) for the Zephyrs.
    Grady Rielly swept the hurdles for the Redbirds, winning the 110 high hurdles in 15.66 seconds and the 300 intermediate hurdles in 41.06 seconds. Paul King won the 1,600 (4:46.67), Payton Heinberg won the 3,200 (10:08.90) and Connor McGowan won the discus (143’2”) for Darlington.
    Belmont’s Jacob Wedig won the shot put (49’2”), and Jaylen Rufenacht placed second in the long jump (20’2”) and fourth in the high jump (5’8”) to lead Black Hawk.
    Place winners for all the other meets attended by the area teams are listed below.
    Darlington, Belmont and the BSMS tri-op will compete at the annual Sparky Reynolds Invitational at Boscobel High School on Friday, May 11, starting at 3:30 p.m. Black Hawk will be at the Sugar River Invitational at Belleville High School on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
    The Redbirds will host the SWAL Conference Meet at DHS on Monday, May 14, beginning at 4 p.m., while the Six Rivers Conference Meet will be held at UW-Platteville on that same Monday, starting at 4:15 p.m.
