Darlington golfers keep lowering scores

    DARLINGTON – Through four league meets this season, the Darlington Redbirds boys’ golf team sits solidly in fifth-place in the SWAL team standings following a fifth-place finish in their home match on Friday, April 27, and a tie for fourth-place finish at Argyle’s Yellowstone Golf Course on Monday, April 30.
    Since opening the season with a score of 226, the Redbirds continued to shave strokes off their round, carding a 207 on a windy day at the Darlington Country Club on Friday, and then posting a season-best round of 189 at Argyle on Monday.
    Senior Brogan Evenstad posted rounds of 43 at home and 42 at Argyle to lead the Redbirds on the course.
    Senior Seth Johnson carded a 47 on Friday and a 49 on Monday, while junior Cole Roelli was second-best on the team at Argyle with a 47.
    Sophomore Cody Crist registered a pair of 51s for the ‘Birds, and fellow sophomore Atticus Stauffacher added a 66 at home on Friday to complete the team score in that match.
    Mineral Point won both of the SWAL Meets last week with scores of 181 at Darlington and 151 at Argyle, and the Pointers sit atop the SWAL team standings with 32 points after winning the first four league events.
    Barneveld (189) was second and Argyle/Pecatonica (193) was third on Friday, while the teams swapped spots on Monday with the host Orioles shooting a 164 and the Golden Eagles carding a 184.
    The Pointers also had a pair of individual medalist in both meets with Dalton Collier firing a six-over 40 to take top honors at Darlington and Simon Mitchell posting a two-under 34 to finish first at Argyle.
    In the first four SWAL matches, there have been four different medalists.
    At Saturday’s River Valley Invitational in Spring Green, the Redbirds placed fourth in the Division 2 standings and ninth overall at the 18-team meet with an 18-hole team score of 382.
    Fort Atkinson posted a score of 333 to place first overall and win the Division 1 meet, while the Pointers edged the Orioles, 353 to 356, for the D2 crown.
    Evenstad and Johnson each shot a round of 85 for the Redbirds. Crist was third at 102 and Roelli carded a 110 to complete the team scoring on the day.
    The Redbirds have SWAL meets at Fennimore’s Hickory Grove Golf Course on Thursday, May 4, and at Cuba City’s Cole Acres Country Club on Monday, May 7, both starting at 4 p.m.
