Evenstad earns All-SWAL honors for 5th-place Redbirds

    NEW GLARUS – Darlington senior Brogan Evenstad secured a spot on the first-team All-SWAL squad while leading the Redbirds to a fourth-place finish at the SWAL Conference Meet held at the Edelweiss Chalet Country Club on Tuesday, May 15.
    The Redbirds carded a team score of 378 to tie for fourth at the eight-team meet and finished in fifth-place overall in the final conference standings with 37 points.
    Mineral Point locked up their fourth straight SWAL title by completing a perfect 72-point season with a first-place finish at Tuesday’s meet tallying a round of 333.
    Argyle/Pecatonica placed second at the conference meet (348) and finished second overall (57) on the season, while Barneveld was third (369) at the meet and third overall (54.5) followed by Fennimore (46.5), who tied the Redbirds for fourth-place (378) at Tuesday’s meet.
    Evenstad carded a 40 on the front nine and a 42 on the back nine to tied for fourth in the individual standings with a round of 82 at the conference meet. His effort moved him into fifth-place in the final individual standings where he joined Mineral Point’s Dalton Collier, Simon Mitchell and Madison Bowers and Fennimore’s Cole Needham on the All-SWAL first-team.
    Second-team All-SWAL honors went to A/P’s Dylan Stietz, Barneveld’s Michael Larson and Owen Pechan, Iowa-Grant’s Brady Peat and MP’s Riley Workman.   
    Redbird senior Seth Johnson narrowly missed an all-conference selection after finishing 11th overall in the SWAL on the season following his tie for 11th-place finish at Tuesday’s meet with a round of 91 (45/46).
    Junior Cole Roelli shot a 96 (49/47) for the Redbirds, while sophomore Cody Crist completed the team scoring with a score of 109 (52/57) at Tuesday’s meet.
    “Brogan played well enough to earn first-team all conference honors. Cole continues to improve and now plays consistent golf while Seth has been a solid number two player. Hopefully, one or two of our players could play well and qualify for sectionals,” said Darlington head coach Rich Westerman.
    A/P’s Mason Holcomb earned medalist honors at the conference meet with a 4-over 76. Mitchell shot a 77 and Collier a 78 for the Pointers.
    The 2018 WIAA Division 3 Regional Meet was held at the Dodge Point Country Club on Tuesday, May 22. The top four teams and the top four who are not members of those teams advanced to the New Glarus Sectional Meet to be held at the Edelweiss Chalet Country Club on Wednesday, May 30, starting at 9 a.m.
